Union's Hayes, Joy honored by TranSouth, seven all-conference players

JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/3/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball placed seven players on the 2011 TranSouth Conference postseason honors list. In addition, Amber Hayes was named the TranSouth Softball Player of the Year, while Tobie Joy was selected as the Newcomer of the Year. Joining Hayes and Joy on the first team all-conference list was Shelby Lamb, Brooke Thomas and Keaton Kirk. Stephanie Saunders and CJ Browder were named second team all-conference performers.

Hayes, a 5-foot-9 senior from Brighton, Tenn., was second in the conference in batting average at .442 while tying for the top spot in RBIs with 50. She also hit eight home runs and was third in the conference in slugging percentage (.709). Hayes added four triples and 14 doubles on the season.

Joy, a 5-foot-1 sophomore from Covington, Tenn., batted .390 with 35 runs scored and 13 RBIs. Joy earned a team-high 24 walks and stole seven bases. She also pitched in five games posting a 4-0 record with a 2.14 ERA.

Lamb, a 5-foot-5 freshman from Shelbyville, Tenn., was second on Union’s team with a .410 batting average with 15 doubles, a team-high 10 home runs and 50 RBI. Her 50 RBI tied Hayes for the team lead.

Thomas, a 5-foot-5 pitcher from Huntingdon, Tenn., was 20-6 on the season with a 1.87 ERA and three saves. She appeared in 34 games with 24 starts and 13 complete games. Thomas had a team-high 167 strikeouts in 157.1 innings pitched and tossed one no-hitter on the season.

Kirk, 5-foot-5 sophomore pitcher from Bolivar, Tenn., was 12-5 on the season with a 2.11 ERA and one save. She appeared in 23 games with 19 starts and nine complete games. She had 127 strikeouts in 116 innings pitched.

Saunders, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Ashland City, Tenn., hit .374 on the season with a team-high 15 doubles, four home runs and 32 RBI. She also played first base and posted a .997 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 324 total chances.

Browder, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Covington, Tenn., hit .354 on the season with a team-high 46 runs scored. She added seven doubles, two triples, five home runs and 30 RBI. Crowder also recorded an inside-the-park home run this season and a perfect 26-for-26 in stolen bases.

Union is the No. 2 seed in this week’s TranSouth Conference Tournament in Henderson, Tenn. Union will open play on Wednesday versus 7-seeded Bethel (Tenn.).
