Union softball falls in conference tournament title game

JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/6/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team advanced to the title game in the 2011 TranSouth Conference Softball Championships, but lost 5-1 to top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University. Union the two-seed in the tournament went 3-2 in the tournament with their only losses coming to Trevecca.

Union won their first two games including an 8-4 win over Bethel (Tenn.) University in the first round and a 4-3 win in eight innings over Lyon (Ark.) College to reach the winner’s bracket final. Union fell 4-1 to Trevecca Nazarene to drop to the loser’s bracket. Union worked their way back to the title game with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College. In the title game, Union took a brief lead of 1-0 in the top of the first, but three runs in the bottom of the first by TNU put the Trojans up for good.

Shelby Lamb led Union with eight hits in 17 at bats in the five games. Stephanie Saunders was 6-for-15 and Amber Hayes was 7-17 in the tournament. Lamb’s five RBI led the way for Union.

Union ends their season with a 41-15 overall record. This marked the first season Union finished with at least 40 wins since their 45 wins in 2005. The 16 losses are the fewest losses for Union since they lost 13 in 2003.
