BLYTHEVILLE, Ark - 5/9/2011 - Union (Tenn.) University sophomore Brett Barry was voted as the 2011 TranSouth Conference Golfer of the Year by the coaches at a meeting prior to the 2011 TranSouth Conference Tournament. Union head coach Andy Rushing also earned his third TranSouth Coach of the Year award after leading his team to a second straight title, and fourth for Union in the past six years. Micah Gentle joined Brett Barry on the all-conference team.
Barry, a 5-foot-10 former Jackson Christian School standout, captured this award by winning three tournament title this season. Barry also posted seven top-5 finishes, including a current four-straight top-5’s. His scoring average is 72.96 in 11 tournaments through 25 rounds. Barry’s posted a 68 on the final round of the conference tournament to help boost the Bulldogs to the title. Barry posted five rounds this season under 70, including three 68’s. He has received TranSouth Golfer of the Week honors twice this season. As a freshman, Barry was a member of the 2010 Union Golf Team that returned to the NAIA National Championship for the first time in 11 years. Now Barry will be leading a group of Bulldogs as they make a return trip to the NAIA National Tournament.
Gentle, a 6-foot senior from Tallassee, Ala., fired a final round 69 to help Union claim another conference title. Along with Barry and Ryan Chandler, Gentle is one of three players who were apart of the 5-member squad that won last season’s title and advanced to the national tournament. Gentle captured on tournament title this season and posted seven top-10’s, including four top-5’s. Gentle finished in a tie for fifth in the conference tournament. His scoring average is 74.52 in 11 tournament and 25 rounds.
Rushing, now in his fifth season as the head coach of the golf team earned his second straight coach of the year honor. His teams have won two straight conference titles and three of the last four (2008, 2010, 2011) under his watch. In addition to his three golf coach of the year honors, Rushing has four conference baseball coach of the year honors in his collections.
Union will travel to Silvis, Ill. for the NAIA National Tournament on May 24-27 at the TPC Deere Run. The TPC Deere Run was the host of last season’s NAIA National Tournament and is also host to the John Deer Classic on the professional golf tour.
