Union softball signs Missouri standout

JACKSON, Tenn. - 6/7/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team has signed Kristen Powell of Sikeston, Mo. to continue her career at the college level. Powell will enter Union this fall as a freshman and will major in nursing.

Powell, a 5-foot-7 first base/pitcher, prepped at Thomas W. Kelley (Mo.) High School where she played four seasons of both softball and basketball. She helped lead her softball team to the state semifinals three times, finishing third in 2007, second in 2008 and fourth in 2010. In 2009, her team advanced to the sectional round. In softball, Powell was named All-State, team MVP, team leader and motivator, all-conference and played in the Senior Showcase.

Powell set several state records including most innings pitched (211), most games pitched (32), most games started (32) and most batters faced (921). She also set a school record for most wins at 19 and a state record for 69 assists as a senior. Powell hit .361 as a senior and committed no errors in the field. In basketball, Powell was a three-time all-conference player.

Powell was named an Academic Athlete and was selected as the Elks Student of the Month.

Powell is the daughter of Tony and Cindy Powell and is a member of Miner Baptist Church.
