JACKSON, Tenn. - 8/2/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University men’s basketball team has signed AJ Roberts of Fresno, California for the 2011-12 season. Roberts will enter Union this fall as a junior and will major in physical education.
Union head coach David Niven says, “AJ is another guy that I am really excited about coaching. He will play primarily on the wing and bring a lot of good attributes to that position. AJ is very good at creating shots for himself and others. He will be one of the best passers on our team next year. That along with his ability to shoot from the perimeter and get in the lane off the dribble will make him a difficult match up for smaller guards.”
Roberts, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, transferred to Union from Niagra County (N.Y.) Community College where he played two seasons of basketball for Coach Beilein. He was named third team all-region as a freshman and first team all-region as a sophomore in junior college. Roberts earned the Team MVP award both seasons. In junior college, he averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks per game. Roberts prepped at Niagara Catholic (N.Y.) High School where he played basketball and football. He led his basketball team to the 2005 and 2007 MMCC Title, along with a Catholic State runner-up in 2007. In high school basketball, Roberts earned first team all-Catholic, defensive MVP, team MVP twice, and team captain three times. His football honors included first team all-Catholic, team MVP, captain and first team all-state.
Roberts is the son of Alfredie Roberts, Sr. and Tina Black.
