Union volleyball falls 3-2 at Mid-Continent

JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/13/2011 - Union University volleyball took their first conference defeat of the season in a 3-2 (25-19, 14-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-13) loss at Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Tuesday. Union dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent improved to 3-11 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

Union dropped the first set, but stormed back with two quick wins in the second and third set. With all the momentum in Union’s favor midway through the fourth set, Mid-Continent started to rally. The home Cougars tied the match by winning the fourth set. In the fifth and deciding set, Union held a 12-8 lead. However, Mid-Continent rallied one more time by outscoring Union 7-1 to claim the match.

Union was led by Abbey Wainwright with a career high 18 kills. Cassidy O’Hair added 12 kills, Anna Sims recorded 11 kills and Kami Dickerson added 10 kills. Emmie Moroski recorded 47 assists, Lauren Sprouse led with 20 digs.

Mid-Continent was led Jenavera Gibson with 12 kills.

Union recorded 62 kills to just 47 from Mid-Continent. However, Mid-Continent recorded 14 aces and 14 blocks in the match. Union managed just four blocks and seven aces.

Up next for Union will be the home opener on Friday, September 16 when Union faces Lyon (Ark.) at 7:00 p.m.
