Jackson, Tenn. - 10/31/2001 - The Union University Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are once again among the top teams in NAIA basketball. The Lady Bulldogs are preseason No. 3, while the Bulldogs come in at No. 19 in the NAIA preseason polls released Oct. 30. See the Men's Rankings and the Women's Rankings on the NAIA website.
Coach Campbell and his Lady Bulldogs hope to improve on last season’s elite eight finish in the NAIA National Championship. They have a tough schedule in which to prepare for the task as they will play ten of the top 25 teams before national tournament time. Union is also shooting for their seventh consecutive TranSouth Conference championship.
On the men’s side, head coach Ralph Turner and his Bulldogs will start the season as the No. 19 ranked team, up five spots from last season’s No. 24 finish. The Bulldogs will compete for the TranSouth Conference championship, a league that has three teams in the top 20 and two more receiving votes.
Both teams will open up their respective seasons this Friday night as they women will host a tournament featuring Lambuth University, Claflin University, and Philander Smith College. Game times for the tournament are 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the Lady Bulldogs playing at 7 p.m. each night. Union’s men will travel to Freed-Hardeman University to participate in a tournament with Freed-Hardeman, Crichton College, and Philander Smith College. Union will play at 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
