KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - 11/8/2011 - The Union University women’s basketball fell 93-45 to the University of Tennessee Lady Vols in an exhibition game Tuesday. The defense for the NCAA No. 3 ranked kept NAIA No. 2 Union at bay.
Tennessee forced 31 Union turnovers, most coming in the first half as the Lady Vols built a 51-16 halftime lead. Tennessee scored 37 points off turnovers in the game. Union responded with a better second half as they played to within 13 points of the Lady Vols over the final 20 minutes.
Union was led by senior guard Lavanda Ross with 17 points and seven rebounds. Astrid Huttamann added eight points and Amy Philamlee scored seven points. Union shot 36 percent from the field, including 45 percent in the second half. Union sank 5-fot-15 three pointers for 33 percent and made both free throws attempted on the night.
Tennessee was led by Taber Spani with 25 points, including 7-of-10 from long range. Shekinna Strikelen, the SEC Preseason Player of the Year scored 17 points. Isabelle Harrison scored 11 points, Meighan Simmons scored 10 points and Glory Johnson grabbed 11 rebounds. Tennessee shot 55 percent in the game, including 57 percent in the second half. They made 40 percent of their three pointers (8-20), including 48 percent (7-15) in the first half. Tennessee shot 72 percent (21-29) from the free throw line.
Union steps back into NAIA action this Saturday when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Cumberlands (Ky.) for a 1 p.m. (CST) game. The game at Cumberlands begins a stretch of games for Union where six of the next seven opponents are ranked in the NAIA preseason poll.
