Union Signs Haywood Soccer Standout

Jackson, Tenn. - 6/11/2003 - The Union University soccer program added Haywood High School star, Humberto Sanchez, Jr. Sanchez will join Union this fall as a freshman and will major in Sports Medicine while in college.

Sanchez, at 5-foot-9 and 135 lbs, will play at the forward position at Union. During his time at Haywood, Sanchez was a two sport player in soccer and tennis. This past season, he helped lead Haywood’s soccer team to District Runner-up, Region Championship, and a Spring Fling appearance. Sanchez was named to the Best of the West All-Tournament team, along with a selection to the All-West Tennessee first team. In his three years of soccer, he scored 44 goals. As a senior, he scored 34 goals and tallied 30 assists. Sanchez is the first player from Haywood’s team to sign with a college after high school.

In the classroom, Sanchez was a member of the Beta Club and the Academic Decathlon team. While at Haywood, he took honors classes.

Union’s head coach, Dr. Darin White is excited to have a great player like Sanchez to join the team from a local high school. White adds, “He (Sanchez) will add a great deal to our team that will have a lot of new faces this year.”
