Union men top Emmanuel 73-58 for third straight victory

JACKSON, Tenn. - 12/12/2011 - The Union University men’s basketball team have a season best 3-game winning streak going after a 73-58 win over Emmanuel (Ga.) College Monday night. Union improved to 7-5 on the season, while Emmanuel dropped to 6-5 overall.

Union’s defense and rebounding advantage in the first 20 minutes helped the Bulldogs push out to a 15-point, 38-23, halftime lead. Union out rebounded Emmanuel 33-16, including 13-3 on the offensive glass in the first 20 minutes. The two teams played to and even 35-35 second half. Union held a 52-34 rebound advantage for the game.

Union scored the game’s first eight points, including back-to-back three pointers from Antoine Hall to start the game. Emmanuel cut the Union lead down to two points at 8-6, but was never able to get any closer. Union quickly extended their lead out to 10 points, 16-6, thanks to a 10-0 run sparked by senior guard David Lane.

In the second half, Emmanuel put together one more run to get back into the game as they outscored Union 14-4 over the first six minutes of the half. The Lions trailed by five points, 42-37, with 14 minutes left. However, Union responded with another run to seal the game. Union posted an 18-4 run to take their largest lead of the game of 19 points, 60-41 at the 7:16 mark. Union never lost the double-digit lead and took the final, 73-58.

Union was led with five players in double figures. Leventrice Gray led the way with 14 points, while Lane scored 13 points. Skyler Vaden added 11 points and Dani Marti scored 10 points. Anthony Freeman, Jr. recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hall finished with a three 3-pointers for nine points in the game. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from long range, and 71 percent (14-24) from the free throw line.

Emmanuel was led by Graham Maxwell with 15 points. Luke Miller added 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Asmatiek Fields added 10 points. The Lions shot 39 percent from the field, 31 percent (8-26) from behind the arc, and 22 percent (2-9) from the free throw line.

The was the final game for Union before the Christmas break. Union will resume play on January 2 in a road non-conference game at No. 25 Campbellsville (Ky.). Union will then open TranSouth Conference play on January 5 at home versus Bethel.
