MCKENZIE, Tenn. - 2/2/2012 - The Union University men’s basketball team earned a 78-71 win at Bethel University Thursday night. Union improved to 15-8 on the season and a league best 8-1 TranSouth record. Bethel dropped to 14-9 overall and 4-5 in league play.
The lead changed hands several times in the game. After 37 minutes of play, the score was tied 67-67. Union’s Leventric Gray recorded an old fashion 3-point play to give Union the lead for good. Union outscored Bethel 11-4 over the final 3 minutes to seal the win.
Union led 42-38 at the half.
The two teams started fast in the first half with both Union and Bethel shooting over 45 percent from the field and making over 30 percent of their 3-pointers. Union hit five 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes, while Bethel sank three from long range.
However, in the second half, Union was just 1-of-7 from behind the arc, while Bethel was 0-of-5.
Union was led by David Lane with 16 points in the game. Gray added 16 points, while Anthony Freeman, Jr. and Antoine Hall scored 13 points each. Union shot 44 percent from the field, 27 percent (6-22) from long range, and 61 percent (14-23) from the free throw line.
Bethel was led by George Coleman with 14 points. Stephen Gillette added 13 points and Caleb Hardy scored 11 points. Bethel shot 41 percent from the field, 20 percent (3-15) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (14-22) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home game versus No. 9 Martin Methodist Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
