Union baseball, softball set to open seasons Friday

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/9/2012 - The Union University baseball and softball teams are schedule to open their respective 2012 seasons Friday, February 10 at home. Fesmire Fields will be alive with the softball team playing William Woods (Mo.) in a double-header at noon, followed by the baseball team playing a double-header versus Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 2:00 p.m.

The baseball is coming off a second TranSouth Tournament title in the past three years, and a third straight trip to the NAIA National Championships Opening Round. Union is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Preseason Polls, and is picked to finish second behind Cumberland (Tenn.) in the TranSouth Coaches Poll. Union senior catcher Doug Joyce has been selected as an NAIA Preseason Baseball All-American. Union also plays on Saturday in a single game versus Lindsey Wilson at 1:00 p.m.

The softball finished last season as the runner-up in both the TranSouth regular season and conference tournament. The Lady Bulldogs are No. 17 in the NAIA Preseason Poll and have been selected to finish first in the TranSouth Coaches Poll.
