JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/1/2012 - The Union University baseball team posted an 11-5 victory over Martin Methodist College in second day action during the 2012 TranSouth Conference Baseball Tournament. Second seeded Union improved to 35-17-1 on the season, while third seeded Martin Methodist dropped to 31-23.

Union remains one of only two unbeatens left in the tournament and will face the other unbeaten team, six seed Blue Mountain (Miss.) Wednesday at noon. The two other teams remaining in the tournament, Martin Methodist and five seed Cumberland, will play an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. Top-seeded Freed-Hardeman and four seed Bethel have both been eliminated from the tournament.

Union jumped out early with a run in the first, followed by three runs in the third. After a dropped fly ball by Union allowed a run to scored in the fourth, Union answered back with a run in the sixth to lead 5-1. However, Union starter Jared Davis (4-5) was cruising until the seventh inning where he ran into trouble. He was relieved but not before allowing three runs to cut Union’s lead to just 5-4. Senior first team all-conference reliever Cody Dew entered the game with one out in the seventh. He retired the last two batters with one inherited runner scoring on a sacrifice fly. Union responded with a pair of runs in the eight and four more in the top of the ninth to put the game way. Dew tossed the final 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts, to earn his ninth save of the season. Davis allowed four runs, two earned on seven hits with a strikeout in his 6.1 innings of work.

Brett Pawlan extended his hitting streak to 15 games and has now hit safely in 22 of his last 24 games. He was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Clint Barnes led with four BRI while RJ Rayborn led Union with three hits.
