JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/12/2004 - Union University senior Chima Abakwue has been named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Week. Last week, Abakwue led the 12th ranked Union Bulldogs to a 75-62 win over No. 17 McKendree College. Also in the win over McKendree, Abakwue passed the 1,500-point mark for his career and puts him at 1,515 points for his time at Union.
Abakwue, a 5-11 guard from Cedar Hill, Texas, has been a four-year starter for the Bulldogs. He holds numerous three point records at Union including three's made in a game (10) and his ever-growing career three point record which currently stands at 323. He passed Clay Gray's (1991-94) 286 career three pointers made earlier this year in a win over Edwards Waters.
In addition to being one of Union's best three point shooters in history, he has also left his mark in the TranSouth Conference. No player has made more three pointers than Abakwue over the past three and a half years. He led the TranSouth Conference in three pointers made as a freshman (86) and as a sophomore (83). He finished second in the TranSouth last season as a junior with 93 three pointers made. In this his senior season, Abakwue is continuing his success as he again leads the league with 56 three points made, and it's not even the halfway mark of the season.
Union is ranked No. 12 in the latest NAIA polls and is currently 12-2 on the season. Tonight, Union will host cross-town rival Lambuth University. The women will play at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men at 8:00 p.m.
