Union Signs Dyer County Basketball Standout for 2004-05 Season

JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/22/2004 - The Union University men’s basketball team has signed Courtney Jones of Newbern, Tenn., to a basketball scholarship starting in the 2004-05 season. Jones will join Union this fall as a freshman and will major in Physical Therapy.

Jones, a 6-foot-5 215 lb. forward, played his final two seasons of basketball for coach Butch Hopkins at Dyer County High School. As a senior, he averaged a double-double with 16.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He played in every game for the Dyer County Choctaws averaging 31.8 minutes per game.

Union’s head coach Ralph Turner is very high on signing Jones. “We are lucky enough that Courtney (Jones) is two things,” adds Turner. “Not only is he a great player, but he is a great person. He is a great fit for our school.”

Jones has similar feelings about his signing with Union. “It means I’m going to get a good education,” Jones says. “It’s going to give me a place where I can play. I am happy as long as I get a good education and that is what I’m thinking about.”

Both of Jones’ parents, Tony and Janet, attended Union. Tony Jones played his college basketball for Union back in the early 1980’s.
