Jackson, Tenn. - 1/4/2002 - The Union University Lady Bulldog softball program has added Mary Kosco for the 2003 season. Kosco is a senior this year at Herrin High School in Herrin, Illinois. She will be the third Herrin High School pitcher to join Union’s squad since 1995. Lynde Capogreco pitched at Union from 1995-1998. Last season’s NAIA Pitcher of the Year, Rachel Murray, will finish her record setting four year career after this season.
Kosco has posted a high school career record of 38-9 with earned run average of less that one run per game. In her past two seasons at Herrin, she has struck out a total of 416 batters including 219 as a junior. Kosco has led Herrin to the regional championship in each of the past two seasons.
Union’s head coach Brian Dunn states, “Mary will be a very big addition to our team. We are thrilled to have such a talented athlete.” Dunn goes on to say, “She’s a wonderful person both on the field pitching and in the classroom studying.” Kosco ranks sixth in here class of 165 students and was inducted into the National Honor Society last spring. She is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Student Chamber of Commerce.
Kosco hopes to continue the success of Herrin High School pitchers when she arrives at Union. All of Union’s pitching records are held by either Capogreco or Murray and they have led Union to four straight 50 plus win seasons. Last season, Union finished their best season ever with a record of 63-8 and a third place finish in the NAIA Softball World Series and a NCCAA National Championship.
