Jackson, Tenn. - 1/7/2002 - Union University basketball players Jessica Henson and Robert Joseph earn the TranSouth Conference Player of the Week Honors.
Last year’s TranSouth Player of the Year, Jessica Henson is off to another great start in her sophomore season. In the only game last week for the Lady Bulldogs, Henson, a native of Bradford, Tennessee, scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. She was 9-of-18 shooting including 4-of-9 from three-point range. Henson also added seven steals, six assists, and one block in the game. Henson, a 5-11 forward, is second in the conference in scoring with an average of 15.6 points per game. She ranks third in three-point percentage at .420 (29-69) and fourth in total field goal percentage at .484 (74-153). Led by Henson, Union ranks first in the conference in scoring average (78.5), scoring defense (57.7), and scoring margin (20.8).
Senior sensation, Robert Joseph received the TranSouth Player of the Week on the men’s side. Joseph, a 6-7 forward from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, recorded a triple double last week against Central Baptist as he tallied 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 blocks. In Union’s two games, he totals 47 points, 25 rebounds, 14 blocks, five steals, and four assists. Joseph’s 22.5 points per game and 9.80 rebounds per game is leading the conference in both categories. His 0.635 field goal percentage is good for fourth in the league. In only 16 team games, Joseph has already broken Union’s single season block record and has a current total of 111 on the year, a 6.9 per game average.
In other news, the Bulldogs broke the school record for three pointers made and attempted in a game last Saturday. In a 109-68 win over National Christian University, the bulldogs made 23 three pointers in 52 attempts (42.9 %). Both numbers broke a record that was set during the 1998-99 season. The old record for three pointers made in a game was 22.
