JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/13/2004 - More Honors Roll In for Lady Bulldogs
Union University is now in its seventh season of varsity women’s volleyball and this week’s NAIA National Rankings proved to be a historic one for the Lady Bulldogs. Union moved up from No. 20 last week to No. 13 in this week’s poll. Last week, Union posted wins over TranSouth rival Trevecca Nazarene, and nationally ranked teams Georgetown College (#10) and Indiana University-Southeast (#30). Union’s previous highest NAIA National Ranking was No. 17 in this year’s pre-season national poll.
Also on the week, Union continued to mount honors as three Lady Bulldogs swept the TranSouth and Region XI Honors. Gladys Wandera was named Player of the Week, Nicole Garber was named Setter of the Week, and Allison Shein was named Libero of the Week. This group of three seniors has led Union to a 13-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the TranSouth.
Wandera, a 6-foot-2 senior from Kakamega, Kenya, was a major player in leading Union to an undefeated week at 3-0. For the week Gladys averaged 5.00 kills per game, 1.25 digs per game, and 1.17 blocks per game. Wandera leads Union with 277 kills, 5.89 kills/game, 50 service aces, and 58 blocks.
Garber, a 5-foot-7 senior from Columbus, Indiana, averaged 12.55 assists per game (138 assists in 11 games played) and recorded 12 digs and 3 service aces. Garber leads Union with 523 assists (12.76 per game)
Shein, a 5-foot7 senior from Lighthouse Point, Florida, averaged 4.75 digs per game and attempted 80 passes with only 5 errors. Shein leads Union with 208 digs (4.33 per game).
