LEBANON, Tenn. - 11/10/2004 - The Union University men’s soccer team kept their season alive with a first round win in the NAIA Region XI Tournament. Union, seeded No. 5, defeated the No. 4 seed Cumberland University (Tenn.) 1-0. With this win, Union (9-8-2) advances to the semifinals versus No .1 seed, and the NAIA’s No. 1 nationally ranked team, Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.). This game will be on Friday at 3:00 pm in Columbia, Ky. on the campus of Lindsey Wilson.
In the game, Union Daren Goldie scored the game’s only goal just five minutes into the game to give Union the 1-0 lead and eventual victory. Freshman goalie Chris Lean tallied his second shutout in the past three games with five saves to help Union to the win.
Union defeated Cumberland on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the conference tournament to assure their trip to the region tournament. Now this win for Union ends the season for Cumberland and puts Union just two wins away from an NAIA National Tournament appearance. This is the first time in Union soccer history that a team has advanced to the NAIA region tournament.
In the other first round game, the No. 3 seed Cumberland College (Ky.) defeated the No. 6 seed Lambuth University. The other semifinal match will feature No. 2 seeded Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) versus Cumberland College (Ky.), also on Friday in Columbia, Ky.
