JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/3/2005 - The Union University Lady Bulldog soccer team didn't take long at all in recorded the programs first win. The Lady Bulldogs topped Clearwater Christian University (Fla.) 2-1 on Saturday to start their inaugural season with a 1-0 record. On the men's side, the Bulldogs remained perfect on the season with a 2-1 overtime win over Clearwater Christian. Union's men are now 3-0 on the season.
In the women's match, Union trail early as Clearwater Christian scored in the 15th minute of the game. It wasn't until just before halftime that Union's Nikki Burau of Arlington, Tenn. scored a goal to tie the match. The score remained 1-1 for the majority of the second half. Then with just 10 minutes left to play, Union's Cheslie Tharpe scored on a perfectly placed shot in the top corner of the goal.
The men's match was just as exciting as both teams played to a scoreless tie for the first 85 minutes of the match. In the 85th minute, Union's Vagner Oliveria scored on an assist by Gareth Munro to give Union a 1-0 lead. However, with just one minute left in regulation, Clearwater Christian scored to tie the game at 1-1 and send the contest to overtime. In overtime, Union's Olivera scored his second goal of the match on a header to give the Bulldogs the win. Craig Clark recorded the assist on the game winner.
The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs will remain in Florida as they both will play Southeastern University on Monday, September 5.
