Union Basketball Announces Bulldog Madness; Continue Hurricane Relief Efforts

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/4/2005 - The 2005-06 basketball teams at Union University announce that this season’s Bulldog Madness will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 9:00 pm. This event will follow a Union volleyball match scheduled for 7:00 pm. During the evening, everyone will have the opportunity to help in the continuing efforts to help those affected by the recent hurricanes.

Bulldog Madness will feature the always popular events such as the slam dunk contest and three point shootouts, plus both teams will participate in a short scrimmage. Free pizza and drinks will be provided along with numerous door prizes, plus the opportunity for one Union student to make a half court shot to win full tuition paid for the spring semester.

In addition to getting a first hand look at the 2005-06 version of the Union University Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, students, faculty, staff and fans alike will have the opportunity to give in the continuing efforts to help relief aid for those affected by the damage from the hurricanes. Anyone wishing to donate, please do so by bringing bottled water, can goods, clothing, or a monetary donation to the Fred DeLay Gymnasium on that evening. All donations will be taken to the Carrollton Avenue Church, an inner city church in New Orleans, Louisiana. Union is cooperation with Vanguard University and Head Coach Russ Davis from Costa Mesa, California in collecting donations for the relief efforts.

Union Lady Bulldog Outlook…
Defending NAIA National Champion Union University has been selected to finish second in the TranSouth Conference this season as voted by the coaches. The Bulldogs lose NAIA Tournament MVP Stephanie Clark, but return seniors Jennifer Henson, Tiffany Fisher, and Ena Daniels. Also returning are sophomores Merideth Richardson and Crystal Eason both started last season as freshman. New faces like freshman Jessica Graves, junior transfer D.J. Sissoko, and red-shirts Latorya Fuller and Josephine Owino will give Union a tremendous boost on both offense and defense.

Union Bulldog Outlook…
Union’s men lost just two seniors from last season's team that won the TranSouth Conference Championship and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. Among those returning is the teams leading scorer in senior Corey Burkett. Also returning are juniors Marcus Cooper, Pierry Valmera, and Ben Frederick. Four players are joining this year’s team, three by way of the transfer. Mack Bealim, Kinley Sellers, and Dewayne Lee will make this year’s team much more athletic that last season's just by stepping on the floor. Freshman and former JCS standout Alan North will give Union a real three-point threat. The TranSouth Athletic Conference men’s basketball coaches have unanimously selected Union University as the preseason favorite for the upcoming 2005-06 basketball season.
