JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/11/2005 - The 2005 version of the Union University men's soccer program advanced further than any other Bulldog soccer team in the eight year history as they played the defending region champion and six-time national champion Lindsey Wilson in the Region XI Title Game. Lindsey Wilson topped Union 3-1 to end the season for Union. Union finished with a record of 13-3-1. Last season, Lindsey Wilson ended Union's season with a 3-0 win in the region semifinals.
Lindsey Wilson scored first with a goal in the 35 minute to take the early 1-0 lead. Union then tied the game just two minutes later on goal by senior Nicola Djordjevic, assisted by Scott Sinclair. Lindsey Wilson promtly answered with a goal in the 44th minuted to take a 2-1 halftime lead. That score remained until late in the game as Union pulled their defenders to attempt to take an offensive advantage, however, it was Lindsey Wilson adding the final goal in the 88th minute to take the 3-1 win.
Union finished the season with the best record and best finish in Union soccer history. This team earned runner-up finishes in the TranSouth regular season, TranSouth Tournament, and NAIA Region XI Tournament. Over the past few years, Head Coach Darin White's team has inched one step closer to the NAIA Nationals, and this year, they were just one win away. Union returns all but two players on a team that will be favored to make that one final step on the road to nationals in 2006.
