Kansas City, MO - 3/20/2002 - Union University’s Robert Joseph has been named NAIA Co-Player of the Year for 2002. Joseph was also selected as a NAIA First Team All-American and to the national tournament All-Tournament team last this week in Kansas, City. These honors are added to his TranSouth Conference Player of the Year and first team All-Conference selection. Junior guard Michael Katrosh and senior guard Brian Johnson have been named NAIA Academic All-Americans.
Joseph, from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, put together a season in which he broke numerous blocks records for Union, the NAIA, and all-time college basketball. Along with all the records, Joseph led the conference in scoring and rebounds with averages of 22.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Those numbers also ranked him No. 10 in the NAIA in scoring per game and No. 13 in the nation in rebounds per game. In 2002 however, Joseph made his presence known with his ability to block shots. In only his second game as a Bulldog, he set a new school record with 12 blocks in a game. In just 10 team games, he passed the old Union record of 70 blocks in a season and more that tripled that number by seasons end with 242. He passed the NAIA record for blocks in a season of 181 with two weeks to go in the season. In the last regular season game of the year, Joseph passed David Robinson’s record of 207 blocks in a season to become the all-time college record holder for blocks in a season. This record earned Joseph a mention on ESPN Sportscenter and a spot in Sports Illustrated.
Union’s junior guard Michael Katrosh was named to the NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete team. Katrosh, a native of Bolivar, Missouri, led the conference in three-point percentage and was No. 9 in the nation in the same category at .446 (50-112). Katrosh is a Sports Management major and has a GPA of 3.57.
Senior walk-on guard, Brian Johnson was also selected to the NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete team. Johnson, from Clarksburg, Tennessee, played in 18 games for the Bulldogs this season averaging 2.4 points per game and shooting .750 (9-12) from behind the arc. Johnson is a Economics/Finance major at Union and has a GPA of 3.77.
