Union Adds Women’s Soccer Player to Fall Roster

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/13/2006 - Candice Blackard has signed to play her college soccer for Union University. Union is preparing for their second season of varsity competition. Blackard, currently a senior at Briarcrest Christian High School, will join Union this fall as a freshman and will major in Music while at Union.

Blackard, a 5-foot-7 forward, was a four-year starter at Briarcrest for Coach Chris Bartels. She was named the team’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Blackard added West Region All-Tournament honors as a junior and senior. She also served as the team’s co-captain during her senior year. Blackard played seven seasons for the Germantown Fury. For the Fury, she helped lead the team to the 2003 and 2005 Tennessee State Championship Game.

Union head coach Brandon Boylan is very excited about what Blackard brings to the team. “Candice’s ability to distribute the ball and score will help us create more chances in our attacking third.”

Off the field, Blackard was a member of the All-State women’s chorus, National Honor Society, and a two-time member of the Southwest Tennessee Honor Choir. She was a six-year recipient of the Joseph A. Clayton Award for academic excellence.
