JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/25/2006 - Cole Floyd, a graduate of Milan High School, won the 2006 NAIA Region XI Golf Tournament and helped lead the TranSouth Champion Union Bulldogs to a third place Region XI finish. With his win, Floyd earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Golf Tournament on May 16-19 in Kansas as an individual qualifier. The Bulldogs are on the bubble for at at-large bid to the national tournament.
Floyd, a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Milan, Tennessee, led after two rounds and then promtly fired a one under 70 to record a three day total of 211 (-2) to win by four shots. This win marked Floyd's first tournament title of the year, after posting two second place finishes this season.
Floyd's appearance in the NAIA National Tournament will be the first appearance, team or individual, for Union since the 1998 season.
Union, the TranSouth Tournament champions, finished the region tournament in third place after sitting in the fourth spot through two rounds. Union's 891 team score was only topped by Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) at 870 and Campbellsville College (Ky.) 880. Cumberland University (Tenn.) placed fourth with a 901 score, while the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) placed fifth with a 904 score.
Individually, Union's group of five players finished as follows. Cole Floyd shot a tournament best 211. Gary Glapa shot 224, Mickey Armstrong shot 227, Drew Cannon shot 230, while William Boyd shot 237.
