JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/12/2006 - The Union University women’s cross country team received their first ever NAIA National Ranking this week.. Union is ranked No. 20 in the latest NAIA polls and is the highest NAIA Region XI team ranked in the polls.
Head Coach Gary Johnson has built both the men’s and women’s programs over the years and has seen progress in each season. The women’s team has won the past three TranSouth Conference Championships along with three straight top-3 finishes in the NAIA Region XI meets. Over the past four seasons, the women’s program has sent six runners to the NAIA National Championship as individual qualifiers. Johnson and his team are poised to make a run for a team appearance in 2006.
This season marks the eighth year of competition for the Lady Bulldogs.
On the year, the Union women’s cross country team posted a first place finish in the UT-Martin Classic. Then, in probably their most impressive outing of the fall, Union placed third overall in the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic in Nashville and were first place among Non-DI schools. Just last week, Union ran in the Memphis Twilight Classic that featured 24 teams from the mid-south and posted a sixth place overall finish and first among all NAIA schools.
Up next for Union University Cross Country will be Southeast Classic on October 21 in Berea, Ky.
