Union Cross Country Receive Honors Following Conference and Region Titles

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/6/2006 - The Union University cross country teams collected plenty of hardware following their sweep of the TranSouth Titles and the women’s NAIA Region XI Championship.

The Lady Bulldogs have won four conference titles in row, while the men have won three straight league titles. In addition, the Union Lady Bulldogs posted their first ever NAIA Region XI Tournament Title to earn the automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Meet on November 18.

For the women, Union posted six of the seven All-Conference runners. Jill Konkol, Lydia Bond, Rachel Winford, Candace Cross, Charley Moss, and Erika Schnatterly each were named to the team. Konkol was named the TranSouth Runner of the Year and head coach Gary Johnson was named the TranSouth Coach of the Year. Union’s women also were well represented on the All-Region Team. Konkol and Bond were named first team All-Region runners, while Winford and Cross were named second team All-Region performers. Johnson was named Region XI Coach of the Year.

On the men’s side, Union posted five of the seven runners honored. John Fox, Douglas Martin, Phillip Thompson, Seth Covington, and Clint Channell were each named TranSouth All-Conference runners. Union head coach Gary Johnson was named the TranSouth Coach of the Year while Fox was named the TranSouth Runner of the Year. In the region honors, Union’s Fox and Martin were named to the first team All-Region, while Thompson, Covington, and Channell were named second team All-Region runners. Johnson was named the NAIA Region XI Co-Coach of the Year.

The Union women’s team will participate in the NAIA National Championship Meet on November 18 in Louisville, Ky. The men will be represented by John Fox, Douglas Martin, and Phillip Thompson as individual qualifiers to the national meet. This is the first time a team will represent Union in the cross country national meet. Since 2001, Union has sent 12 (six men, six women) runners who participated as individual qualifiers to the nationals. Union women’s cross country started in 1999, while the men’s program didn’t start until 2001.
