JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/16/2007 - Union University’s Pierry Valmera is the TranSouth Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week for the week ending January 14, 2007. This is Valmera’s second TranSouth Player of the Week honor this season.
Valmera, a 6-foot-8 senior center from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, helped lead No. 13 Union University to a 2-0 week in TranSouth Conference play. In Union’s 117-83 win over conference newcomer Mid-Continent University (Ky.), Valmera scored 26 points, grabbed nine rebounds, had one assist, three blocks, and two steals. The all-conference performer shot 12-of-15 from the field. In the Bulldogs 92-87 road win at Bethel College (Tenn.), Valmera posted a double-double against the Wildcats with 21 points and 13 rebounds. He also added two blocks and a steal to go with his 9-of-16 shooting from the field. His averages on the week were 23.5 points, 11 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 1.5 assists. Valmera shot 21-of-31 (68%) from the field.
Earlier this season, Valmera joined the 1,000 point club for his career at Union. The senior current sits at 1,169 points for his career. He also has a total of 604 rebounds in his stellar career.
Union is now 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in TranSouth Conference play. Up next for No. 13 Union will be a battle versus No. 22 Crichton College (Tenn.) at Union on Thursday, January 18 at 8:00 pm. The Union Lady Bulldogs will play Blue Mountain College (Miss.) at 6:00 pm on Thursday at Union.
