Union Picked Third in 2007 TranSouth Softball Pre-Season Poll

JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/25/2007 - The 2007 version of the TranSouth Conference Softball Pre-Season Poll, as voted by the coaches, has been released. The Union University Lady Bulldogs were voted third in the poll. Last season, Union finished in two-way tie for second in the regular season and posted a third place finish in the conference tournament.

Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.), the defending TranSouth regular season and tournament champions, has been selected to repeat in 2007 by gaining eight of the nine first place votes.

Finishing out the nine-team league is Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) in second place, Union University (Tenn.) in third place, Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) in fourth place, Bethel College (Tenn.) in fifth place, Mid-Continent University (Ky.) in sixth place, Lambuth University (Tenn.) in seventh place, Cumberland University (Tenn.) in eighth place, and Crichton College (Tenn.) in ninth place.

Trevecca Nazarene represented the TranSouth last season in the NAIA Softball National Championship. However, conference newcomer Bethel College also advanced to the national tournament as a representative from another conference.

Martin Methodist joined Trevecca Nazarene as the two representatives from the TranSouth to the NAIA Region XI Tournament. The Lady Trojans took home the region title as well.

The number of softball teams in the league has almost doubled with addition of four new teams this season. Bethel rejoins the TranSouth after leaving the league following the 1998-99 season. Lambuth and Mid-Continent have also joined the league. Crichton, who joined the TranSouth last season in other sports, will showcase their new softball program in this, their inaugural season. Also, looking ahead to the 2008 season, Lyon College (Ark.) will be adding softball to increase the total number of softball teams to 10.

The 2007 softball season for the TranSouth teams will begin around the middle of February. Fans can find more information about TranSouth Softball, including rosters and a composite schedule, online at www.transouth.org.
