Union Baseball Wins TranSouth Tournament;
Wyatt, Rushing Receive Honors

Cleveland, Tenn. - 5/4/2002 - The Union University Bulldogs took both TranSouth Championships by winning the conference tournament with an 11-3 victory over Lee University. This comes after the Bulldogs won the TranSouth Regular Season Title over Lee during the final week of the season.

Union swept the post-seaosn baseball honors as senior third baseman, Jeff Wyatt was named player of the year and Coach Rushing was named coach of the year. Wyatt, a local standout from Jackson, has put up an outstanding season. He is hitting .392 on the year with 12 double, seven, triples, and 13 homeruns. Wyatt has driven in a team high 73 runs and has a slugging percentage of .703. Wyatt has also been used often in relief as he has a 3-3 record with three saves in 18 appearances. For Coach Rushing, this year marks the third season in five years that his Bulldogs have won at least 40 games. He led this group to a current 42-18 record and reached a No. 4 national ranking this season. This marks the second TranSouth regular season championship for the Bulldogs and their first tournament championship since the TranSouth's conception in 1997.

The Bulldogs placed four guys on the all-conference first team and three other on the all-conference second team. Being named to the first team was Wyatt at third base, Roger Cook as a utility infield, Chip Briggs in the outfield, and Joseph Talley as a pitcher. Making the second team was Rolando Agosto at shortstop, Marc Glass at catcher, and Blake Allen at pitcher.

Union continues their run for the World Series as they travel to Lebanon, Tenn. to open the NAIA Region XI tournament. Union will play Cumberland College of Kentucky in the opening round on Wednesday at 12:00 noon.
