JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/26/2007 - Latoya Bellamy has signed with the Union University Lady Bulldog basketball program. Bellamy is transferring from Austin Peay State University were she sat out last season. She will enter Union this fall with four years of eligibility remaining.
Union head coach Mark Campbell says of Bellamy, “Latoya fits perfectly into our system because she can shoot the three and defend. She can also play three positions. Campbell adds, “We are really excited to have another great, well coached player from West Tennessee.”
Bellamy, a 5-foot-10 forward, is a 2006 graduate of Westview High School in Martin, Tennessee. She was a Tennessee Miss Basketball Finalist in both 2005 and 2006. Bellamy averaged 18 points per game over her last two seasons at Westview. She led her team to a two-year record of 64-8 while being ranked the No. 1 team in the state. Bellamy shot 55-percent from the field and 77-percent from the field during her high school career. She was named District MVP, All-District, and All-Region. Bellamy was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Spanish Club in high school.
Bellamy joins State Tournament MVP and Tennessee Single-A Miss Basketball winner Kalya Hudson as the two new players signed for next year. Union also has four players coming off red-shirt seasons. Two players return from medical red-shirt including the two-time Tennessee Miss Basketball and NAIA All-Tournament performer Merideth Richardson. Martin native Laura Crittendon is also returning from an injury suffered before the season started. Nikita Taylor and Beatrice Awino spent last season as red-shirt players will play in 2007 for the Lady Bulldogs.
