JACKSON, Tenn. - 6/29/2007 - The Union University women’s basketball team has added one final piece to the team for the upcoming season. Ella Joines, of England in Great Brittan, has signed to play for Union head coach Mark Campbell and the Lady Bulldogs. She will enter Union this fall as a freshman.
Joines, a 5-foot-7 guard, comes to Union from England where she played basketball at Barking Abbey High School. Over her last three years, she averaged double figures in points each season. As a senior, Joines averaged 18 points, six assists, and three rebounds per game and helped her team to a 23-0 record.
“Ella is one of the best pure shooters I have seen,” claims Campbell. And Campbell has three of the best shooters in the NAIA in Merideth Richardson, Crystal Eason, and Kaitlin Dudley who have shattered team records and threaten national tournament records during their careers. Campbell adds, “Ella’s strengths fit perfectly in our system and will help us right away. She is a typical Union student with outstanding Christian and academic values.”
The Union Lady Bulldogs open their season on November 3, 2007 versus national tournament team Harris-Stowe State College (Mo.) for Homecoming. Union plays six of their first nine games of the year versus teams that played in the national tournament last season. The team is looking to defend their TranSouth title, which was their ninth regular season and eighth tournament title in the 11-year history of the league. The team also eyes another trip to the national tournament. With an appearance in this season’s national tournament, the Union Lady Bulldogs would tie the record for most appearances by any team in NAIA history with 19 trips. Union has won the national title three times (1998, 2005, and 2006) and has been to eight final fours, including three in a row.
