- Before Union: Long comes to Union after spending one season at Maryville College. He prepped at University School of Jackson where he is a 2005 graduate. While at USJ, Long lettered is each of his four seasons in baseball under coach Brad Dyer and football for coach Mickey Marley. Long helped lead the baseball team to a Tennessee State Title in 2002 and then again in 2005. As a junior, he was named a second team All-West Tennessee performer while batting .422. He followed that effort with a .335 batting average as a senior. In football, Long was a three-time All-Region performer and was also named All-State as a senior at the wide receiver position. Also during his senior year, Long was voted as USJ's Team Captian. Upon graduating from USJ, Long was named to the USJ Hall of Fame.
