Before Union: Hatch prepped at Huntingdon High School where he played baseball and football. He received the honors of All-District and 2nd team All-West Tennessee his junior year. His senior year he was District MVP, West Tennessee Pitcher of the Year, Team Captain, Team MVP, and participated in the West Tennessee All-Star Game. His senior year at Huntingdon, Hatch posted a 1.44 ERA with 94 strikeouts. He also tossed 42 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. In a regional semi-finals appearance, he tossed nine innings, allowed one hit, and struck out 17 batters.
