Before Union: Mitchell prepped at West Plains (Mo.) High School where he ran four seasons of cross country and track. Mitchell was named Ozark All-Conference three times, all-district three times, all-sectional twice, Southwest Missouri All-Conference three times and was a three-time state qualifier. Mitchell also won the Polar Bear 10K title twice. As a track runner, Mitchell was named Ozark All-Conference twice, all-district, all-sectional and was a state qualifier. Academically, Mitchell was a member of the National Honor Society.
