Head Coach
Head Coach Gary Johnson is beginning his
fourth season as head coach of Union's
tennis team. This is his sixth year at the University. Coach Gary Johnson
also began his second year as the head coach of
the Women's Cross Country team this past fall.
Originally, Johnson is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Union with a
Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1992. Johnson earned a Master
of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Memphis.
The past three seasons, Johnson has taken his team to the NAIA National
Championships, with his bulldogs finishing the season ranked #12
in the NAIA. His career coaching record is 46-10. Last
season, Coach Johnson earned his second consecutive TranSouth Coach of the Year honor.
Johnson adds enthusiasm and a positive outlook to the tennis program. One of
his challenging goals is to get individual athletes to think and function
like a team. Personally, he as benefited by gaining a new perspective on
international diversity and an appreciation for America's culture.
Johnson married the former Holly Tignor, a Jackson native, in December 1999.
She is the Assistant to the V.P. of Investments at Bancorp South.
