Head Coach Gary Johnson is beginning his fifth season as head coach of Union's tennis team. He is also the coach of the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams here at Union.

Originally, Johnson is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Union with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1992. Johnson earned a Master of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Memphis. 

The past four seasons, Johnson has taken his team to the NAIA National Championships, with his bulldogs finishing last season ranked #8 in the NAIA.  His career coaching record at Union is 62-15.  Coach Johnson earned his third consecutive TranSouth Coach of the Year honor last season.

Johnson adds enthusiasm and a positive outlook to the tennis program. One of his challenging goals is to get individual athletes to think and function like a team. Personally, he as benefited by gaining a new perspective on international diversity and an appreciation for America's culture.

Johnson married the former Holly Tignor, a Jackson native, in December 1999.  She is the Assistant to the V.P. of Investments at Bancorp South.
