Head Coach
Gary Johnson
The past year has been a busy one for Cross Country coach Gary
Johnson. He was married December 11, 1999 to the former Holly
Tignor of Jackson. Coach Johnson coach the Women's Cross Country
team during their first season, while also completed his third
year as head coach of the Men’s Tennis program at Union.
Coach Gary Johnson will begin his second year as the head coach of
the Women's Cross Country team.
Johnson is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from
Union University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical
Education. He completed his Master of Science degree at the
University of Memphis in December 1993. He is currently pursuing a
Doctor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Middle Tennessee
State University.
Johnson will continue coaching both cross country and tennis
this year. Union will be adding a Men’s cross country program in
the Fall of 2001, which Gary would like to be a part of
establishing. Johnson was awarded Coach of the Year honors in the
TranSouth for both Cross Country and Tennis this past year.
According to Johnson, "This year’s team will not catch
people by surprise like we did last year, so we hope to build on
that success by adding some new runners to our five returning
members of last year’s team. As long as we stick together and
grow as athletes and as people, our team should be
successful."
