Gary Johnson is now in his fourth season as the head coach for the Union Women’s Cross Country team. Last season, Johnson led the Lady Bulldogs to their highest finish ever as they placed second in the TranSouth Conference. Johnson also coach Union’s first ever NAIA National Tournament qualifier in Michelle Hardee. He was named the TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year.
Originally from Tulsa, Okla., Johnson graduated from Union University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He completed his Master of Science degree at the University of Memphis in December of 1993. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Middle Tennessee State University.
In addition to women’s cross country, Johnson will continue in his second season as men’s cross country coach and his sixth season as the men’s tennis coach. He completed a sweep of his sports in 2001-02 when he received the coach of the year award in each of the three sports he coaches. Johnson has been named TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year in women’s cross country twice (1999, 2001), men’s cross country once (2001), and men’s tennis four seasons (1999-2002).
This will be the fourth season of this very young program and Johnson has built and improved on each season. Union’s hopes to improve on last season’s runner-up finish in the conference and continue to be represented in the NAIA National Cross Country Meet.
Johnson is married to the former Holly Tingor of Jackson. The two are active fitness runners and are members of Englewood Baptist Church.
