High school teammates share college success in different sports

By Whitney Jones, "http://www.cardinalandcream.info/category/sports/"&rt;Cardinal & Cream

Two of Union's best female athletes — "http://www.uu.edu/athletics/info/players/player.cfm?ID=927"&rt;Amy Philamlee and "http://www.uu.edu/athletics/info/players/player.cfm?ID=936"&rt;Savannah Hughes — have much more in common than their incredible athletic ability. The two walked across the same stage to graduate last spring from the same high school in Jonesboro, Ark., grew up in the same church and were honored with the same award in each of their sports.

"We've known each other since kindergarten," Hughes said.
Philamlee, a guard for the Lady Bulldogs basketball team, and Hughes, an outside hitter for the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team, were both named TranSouth Freshman of the Year for their sport.

Although the two women went to high school together and have played on the same basketball and volleyball teams, attending Union was not a joint decision for these two friends.

Philamlee, an undecided major, said her interest in Union started early — her sophomore year of high school — when Mark Campbell, head women's basketball coach and instructor of physical education, began recruiting her for the Lady Bulldogs. She committed to Union and the team the summer before her senior year.

"I visited here and I just fell in love with it," Philamlee said. "I really liked it. I like the basketball team and the Christian aspect of it all."

Campbell said Philamlee is both determined and tough, qualities that played a role in her success on the court.
"She's a perfect fit for Union University in every way — spiritually, athletically, academically — so (recruiting Philamlee) was a no-brainer," he said.

Similarly, Hughes' coach, Kelly Elliott, assistant professor of physical education, said when she met the award-winning player she knew Hughes would make an "immediate impact" on the volleyball team because of her high standards and work ethic.

Hughes, a biology major, began considering Union after attending Centrifuge, a summer camp, during her sophomore, junior and senior years at Valley View High School.

Being a self-starter, Hughes called the university after researching the volleyball team and was eventually recruited to play. Elliott, who will not be coaching next year, said this trait of Hughes is a benefit for her both on and off the court.

"The truly great players, you see them very self-motivated and self-disciplined," Elliott said. "You see that in her play and her desire to be the best that she can be. More importantly, I think many times there's something that a player has to have that's just kind of special, whether it's the 'it' factor or whatever you want to call it. She has that."

The honor of TranSouth Freshman of the Year is determined by a vote from all the coaches in the division, Elliott said. She added that each coach must vote for a player not on his or her team.

The success of both women shows the strength of Valley View High School's athletic program, Elliott added.

Both athletes said the rivalry games highlighted their respective seasons, but they said they are looking forward to new rivalries that will form in the coming years of NCAA Division II play.

"The conference championship game was the best atmosphere ever," Philamlee said."I love playing because it was a packed house, and it was against our rival. It was the conference championship game and we won."

Union University announces Mooberry as new head volleyball coach

Union University has announced Christy Mooberry as the new head coach of the women's volleyball program. Mooberry comes to Union after spending the last four seasons at Montreat (N.C.) College.

Dr. Jerry N. Tidwell, Senior Vice President for University Relations said, "We are thrilled to have Christy Mooberry leading our women's volleyball program for many reasons. Her competitive spirit coupled with the desire to see these young ladies grow and mature in their relationship with Christ are unique qualities that make her an excellent fit for Union University."

Mooberry left her mark on Montreat as she led the volleyball program to the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season title in 2010, and a tournament title in 2011. She improved their standing in conference rankings each season she coached at Montreat. In 2010, her team set a Montreat volleyball record with a program best 28 wins. Her team participated in the NAIA National Championships Opening Round in 2011. She led her team to at least 25 victories in each of her last three season at Montreat.

Prior to coaching at Montreat, Mooberry coached at Newfane (N.Y.) High School. She also coached the Western New York Stars Volleyball Club team.

Union Director of Athletics Tommy Sadler said, "We are very excited to have Christine Mooberry to lead our volleyball program. She has been successful at every level she has coached and has a great work ethic. Coach Mooberry will not only help our student-athletes sharpen their volleyball skills, but also help them grow academically and spiritually as young women."

Mooberry played volleyball at the high school and club levels in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. She played college volleyball for two seasons at the University of Saint Francis (Ill.). While there, she helped lead her teams to back-to-back Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament titles. Mooberry was named a scholar athlete and was named to the Dean's List in both 1998 and 1999.

Mooberry then transferred to the Moody Bible Institute where she graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in sports ministry. While at the Moody Bible Institute, she earned numerous volleyball awards, including six all-tournament awards, two tournament MVPs, and NCCAA Midwest Region All-Tournament in 1999 and 2000. She served as team captain and also earned the Most Inspirational Award while playing in the Grace Bible College Volleyball Classic. Mooberry earned the President's Award and was named the Moody Bible Institute Female Athlete of the Year for 2000-01.

After graduation, Mooberry (then Simmons) and her husband Scott were married in June of 2001 and moved to Newfane. Her first job was an assistant coach position for Wilson (N.Y.) High School for one year, before taking the head coaching job at Newfane High School. During her six years as head coach at Newfane, she posted a 92-26 record and was a perfect 48-0 in conference play over the last four years. They earned four conference titles and were Section VI state finalist from 2004-07.

Mooberry founded the Western New York Stars USA Volleyball Club in 2002, which provided opportunities for both athletic development and ministry impact.

Mooberry is a USAV Level II Certified Coach through the USAV's Coaching Accreditation Program, an International Sports Sciences Association Certified Fitness Trainer, and a New York State Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. In addition, she holds a New York State coaching certification. She was published in the June/July 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association's Coaching Volleyball magazine. Mooberry also holds a Master's Degree in Kinesiology with a Coaching emphasis through Georgia Southern University.

Elliott resigns as volleyball coach, resumes full-time teaching at Union

Union University volleyball coach Kelly Elliott has announced her resignation as head coach. Elliott will remain at Union and will resume her full-time teaching duties at the University.

"While we are very saddened by Kelly's decision to step down as head coach of women's volleyball here at Union, the prayerful manner in which Kelly arrived at and communicated this decision causes me to admire her even more," says Dr. Jerry Tidwell, Union's Senior Vice President for University Relations. "Kelly is a dedicated Christian wife, mother, and mentor, who happens to be a very good volleyball coach. We are grateful that she will continue to offer her support to the program in the days ahead."

Elliott took over the coaching job in 2010 and has coached the team for the past two seasons. In 2010, Elliott led the team to a 13-1 league record, winning the TranSouth Regular Season Title. She was named the 2010 TranSouth Coach of the Year. During her time as head coach, Elliott posted a 46-36 (.561) overall record and a 22-8 (.733) TranSouth record.

"The administration at Union has been very supportive. While they desired for me to continue in this role, they have been very understanding of my need to put my family and health first," said Elliott. "The time commitment, combined with my teaching responsibilities, placed constraints on me that I believe impacted my role as wife and mother."

I am confident in their commitment to find a great coach that will challenge the girls on the court, and I also sense a strong commitment to find a coach that will continue to strive to integrate faith in the team experience," Elliott said.

Elliott began working at Union in 2004 and served as the residence life director for three years. In 2007, she was named an Assistant Professor in Union's Sports Management program where she has taught full-time, with the exception of the 2010 and 2011 volleyball seasons.

Elliott and her husband, Michael, reside in Jackson and are the parents of Isaac and Anna. They are active members of Englewood Baptist Church, where Michael serves as the Minister to Families with Children.

Elliott spent seven seasons (1997-2003) as the assistant coach at King (Tenn.) College under head coach Susie Toomey. Toomey, who is also Elliott's mother, spent 25 years at King, accumulating a 749-229 record, which is sixth in the NAIA in total wins and seventh in the NAIA in winning percentage for a coaching career.

Elliott earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from King College in 1995, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She also holds two Masters' degrees. The first was a Master of Education in Counseling from the University of Louisville (Ky.) in 1997, followed by a Master of Arts in Physical Education with a sports management concentration from East Tennessee State University in 1999.

As a student-athlete, Elliot was a four-year starter on the volleyball team at King from 1991-1994. She was voted into the King College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 as part of the 1994 volleyball team, the only volleyball team to be inducted thus far. Elliott earned numerous honors including Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Athlete of the Year in 1995, first team all-conference in 1993 and 1994, NAIA Scholar Athlete in 1993 and 1994, and NCCAA All-District and Scholar Athlete honors in 1993 and 1994.

Elliott will continue to help with spring practice and team Bible studies until her replacement is hired.

Karen Tankersley Sinclair has been promoted from assistant athletic trainer to the position of head athletic trainer for the Union University athletic programs. Sinclair served as the assistant trainer at Union for the past two seasons.

Sinclair says, "I am honored and delighted by my promotion to serve as Head Athletic Trainer for Union University Athletics. With Union's move into NCAA DII, the future for the athletic program is very bright; and I am excited to be in a position in which I can serve the student-athletes by enabling them to perform to their highest athletic ability. My goal is to not only contribute to the success of the student-athletes in the competitive athletic setting, but more importantly to influence their lives for God's glory."

The position became available when Kristy Johnson, Union's head trainer for the past five seasons, accepted the same position at her alma mater, Southern Oregon University.

"We wish Kristy Johnson great success in her new role at Southern Oregon", said Senior Vice President for University Relations, Jerry Tidwell, "But we are thrilled to have Karen willing and well prepared to move into the head trainer position. Karen's preparation at Southern Mississippi and work experience at places like Southern Methodist (Texas) and North Carolina should serve as wonderful preludes to continuing to build a top-level athletic training program here at Union University."

Sinclair, a native of Covington, Tennessee, who began her work at Union in the fall of 2009, had already become a member of the National Athletic Trainer Association and Board of Certification in March of 2006. She is also certified as a Performance Enhancement Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Before coming to Union, Sinclair worked as staff assistant athletic trainer at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 2008-2009. Her primary responsibilities there were to work with women's volleyball, women's track and field and cross country.

Sinclair earned a Master of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science with specialization in athletic training from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She completed her thesis on kinematics of the scapula and shoulder complex in overhead athletics. While at North Carolina, her clinical responsibilities as a graduate assistant included working with men's lacrosse, women's volleyball and fencing teams. Sinclair also served as an instructor in undergraduate anatomy labs and physical education classes.

Sinclair received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2005, where she graduated cum laude. She was a four-year varsity letter winner as a member of the Southern Mississippi cross country and track and field teams.

Sinclair was married to her husband Scott on June 17, 2011.
