2001 Lady Bulldog Volleyball Season Outlook

Union enters the 2001 season with their sights set on defending their TranSouth regular season title and advancing in the NAIA regional tournament for the fourth straight season. With five starters from last season returning and the addition of two promising freshmen, the Lady Bulldogs are very optimistic about 2001.

Union’s team leader and NAIA record holder, Lauren Hayden is back for her senior season. Hayden was named a NAIA and NCCAA All-American last season at the outside hitter position. For each kill she tallies this season, she will set a new NAIA record for kills in a career. As seniors on this year’s squad, middle hitter Emily Van Dam, right side hitter Sara Davenport, and outside hitter Misty DePriest will add their consistency and experience. Two juniors will also see valuable court time this year as first team All-Conference performer Andrea Darr anchors the middle hitter position and Liz Travis will be called on as both a defensive specialist and setter. Union will miss the play of Cheryl Layman for the entirety of 2001 due to season ending shoulder surgery.

Two immediate impact freshmen have been added to the 2001 Lady Bulldog roster. Allison Shein will make valuable contributions at the outside hitter position early and often, while Nicole Garber will start at the setter position.

This season for the Lady Bulldogs will prove to be a test as all the conference opponents look to be very competitive. However, over their first three seasons of competition Union has accumulated an overall record of 113-29 along with two consecutive conference regular season championships. Union’s head coach Brian Dunn is excited about this season and feels they are poised enough to make a run at the conference championship and yet another berth in the region tournament.
