  • Chaney Named as Recipient of National Distinguished Service Award

    Dr. Sharon ChaneyOctober 8, 2014 - The National Council of Teachers of English has named Dr. Sharon Chaney as the recipient of its Distinguished Service Award for 2014.  The recognition is in honor of her many years of outstanding service to the Council. Dr. Sharon Chaney serves on Union University’s Hendersonville, Tennessee campus as the Clinical Coordinator for the School of Education.  Chaney mentors students who are completing their student teaching experience or obtaining similar practicum hours on a transitional teaching license. Prior to serving at Union, Chaney served in the Metro Nashville Public School system in a variety of roles, most recently as the Director of the Office of Advanced Academics and Talent Development:  Advanced Placement, Cambridge, International Baccalaureate, AVID, and Encore.

  • Shackleford Provides Professional Development to Sumner County Teachers

    Dr. Mike ShacklefordSept. 19, 2014 - Dr. Mike Shackleford, Associate Professor of Education, has partnered with Rucker-Stewart Middle School in an effort to help the school see greater gains in student achievement. Shackleford began the long-term effort on September 10 and will remain with the work until May 2015.

  • Cushman Selected to Serve on Supervisor Evaluation Advisory Council

    Dr. Carla CushmanSept. 19, 2014 - Dr. Carla Cushman, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership, has been chosen to serve on the Supervisor Evaluation Advisory Council for the Tennessee Department of Education during the 2014-15 school year.  Cushman will be one of only sixteen individuals to serve on the Advisory Council.  The council is charged with reviewing and analyzing national and state model supervisor standards and relevant research about the principal evaluator role. Likewise, the council will seek feedback from various stakeholders to inform the development of a voluntary supervisor evaluation rubric, while also aiming to solicit districts interested in piloting a supervisor evaluation rubric.

  • Phillips Presents Pew Research Grant Findings

    Ben Phillips Pew Grant PresentationApril 21, 2014 – Dr. Ben T. Phillips recently presented the work he has been conducting in relation to his Pew Research Grant topic, Determining the Cognitive Strategies of High-Performing Test Takers on a College Readiness Math Assessment. The university’s Pew Research Grant committee named Phillips as a 2012-13 Pew Research Grant recipient.  As a result of being selected by the committee, Phillips was asked to share his findings with the Pew Grant committee and other interested individuals at the annual Pew Research Grant luncheon. The luncheon was held on April 16th on the main campus of Union University in Jackson, TN.

  • Teacher Education and Christian Education Meet in Indonesia

    Nancy Easley teaching in IndonesiaJanuary 15, 2013 - A hill on the island of Java, above the northern shore of Semarang, Indonesia, was a new setting for Nancy Easley, Associate Professor of Education at Union University’s Germantown location, who had traveled overseas to teach. In the spring of 2012, Easley, and her husband, Ken, were invited to each teach two classes in the graduate programs at STBI, a Southern Baptist Seminary operated by the Indonesian Baptist Convention.

  • Center Honored by Name Change that Recognizes Dr. Thomas R. Rosebrough

    Thomas R. RosebroughDec. 12, 2012 - The Board of Trustees at Union University has unanimously approved a name change for the Center for Educational Practice at Union University. From this point forward, the Center for Educational Practice will be called the Thomas R. Rosebrough Center for Educational Practice. This Trustee recognition is based on the faithful and long-term service of Dr. Thomas R. Rosebrough, Executive Dean and University Professor of Education in the College of Education and Human Studies at Union University. Dr. Rosebrough has served as Dean of the College since 1996, and has numerous years of undergraduate and graduate teaching experience, including as a professor of educational foundations, learning theory, and instructional design.

  • Phillips Awarded Prestigious Pew Research Grant

    Dr. Ben T. PhillipsOct. 31, 2012 - Dr. Ben T. Phillips was recently named as a 2012-13 Pew Research Grant recipient. The Pew Research Grant is a $4,500 internal grant from Union University. The Pew Research Committee, composed of university faculty, distributes a maximum of four grants each year. The Pew Research Grant seeks to nourish Christian scholarship that will make a meaningful contribution to academic discussion. Phillips’ proposed research, Determining the Cognitive Strategies of High-Performing Test-Takers on a College Readiness Math Assessment, aims to determine what strategies high-scoring test takers use to answer questions on the ACT math test. More specifically, Phillips is seeking to observe and describe the cognitive strategies used by high performing test takers so such strategies can be identified and distinguished from the strategies used by average performers on the ACT.

  • Dr. Stephen R. Marvin Nominated as Vice-President/President Elect of Research Organization

    Dr. Stephen R. MarvinOct. 25, 2011 - Dr. Stephen R. Marvin, Union University’s M.Ed. Program Director and Assistant Professor of Education on Union’s Germantown, TN campus, has been nominated as one of two candidates for Vice-President/President-Elect of the Mid-South Educational Research Association (MSERA). MSERA is a regional affiliate of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), a widely respected international professional organization that has the primary goal of advancing educational research and its practical application. MSERA represents Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Marvin has been involved with MSERA for over ten years, having first participated in the conference as a doctoral student.

  • Executive Dean Rosebrough Shares Insight on Educational Reform

    Oct. 4, 2011 - Current educational policies are highlighting the need for increased accountability. Students, teachers, and administrators across the nation are feeling the pressures of No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top, while Tennessee educators are working under the guidelines of First to the Top. Regardless of the level, accountability in the name of increased student achievement is the focus of today’s leading educational policies.
