Atkins Discusses Research-based Instructional Interventions for Math and Science
Michele W. Atkins, Ph.D., Professor of Education
February 2, 2010 - Dr. Michele Atkins presented a series of sessions to the teachers in the Paris Special School District. The professional development sessions were entitled Research-based Instructional Interventions in Reading and Mathematics. The sessions began in August of 2009 and were completed in January of 2010.
Classroom teachers have always searched for interventions to implement with struggling students that would prove to be effective in building mastery in reading and mathematics. However, with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, educators are more mindful that the interventions they use are grounded in research. This workshop series afforded K-8 teachers the opportunity to experience those research-based instructional interventions shown effective in the reading and mathematics content areas. Teachers participated in small-group discussion, lesson plan analysis and development, and role play in order to design individually-tailored interventions for existing students in their classrooms.
