Differentiation - a Philosophy of Teaching
Kenneth Newman, Ed.D., Professor of Educational Leadership, Jackson
February 25, 2011 - Dr. Kenneth Newman led an inservice session for teachers at LaGrange Moscow Elementary, on January 3, 2011. LaGrange Moscow Elementary School serves students in PK-6. While elementary teachers quite naturally use differentiated instruction, sometimes they need a reminder that they must be more intentional about using differentiation as they plan their lessons. This inservice session presented differentiation as a philosophy of teaching rather than merely a set of strategies. The presenter's personal story of his own math deficiences throughout his elementary and high school years served as the backdrop for this session, which included a working definition for differentiation, as well as ideas suggested by both the teachers and the presenter to be even more intentional about the need to differentiate for today's students.
