Michele W. Atkins, Ph.D., Chair, Institutional Review Board & Professor of Education
November 1, 2008 - Drs. Michele Atkins, Kenneth Newman, and Ann Singleton presented at the Annual Conference of the International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their session was entitled "Reflection: A Key to Developing Effective Teachers."
Reflection is a key to the development of effective teachers at any level. Moreover, in order to reflect upon teaching, self-awareness and self-assessment are essential. Cherniss and Goleman (2001) asserted that self-awareness is vital in recognizing strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, faculty members should understand the relationship between these constructs and utilize the process of reflection in order to develop professionally. This interactive session focused on a framework for reflection for professional growth. Moreover, the participants investigated a framework to facilitate self-reflection, evaluated examples of completed reflection frameworks, and distinguished among compelling and inept reflective frameworks.
