Exploring the iY Generation

Kenneth Newman, Ed.D., Professor of Educational Leadership, Jackson

March 16, 2011 - On March 12, 2011, Dr. Kenneth Newman’s presention at Jackson Central-Merry Academy of Medical Technology explored the iY Generation (also known as Screenagers), based on the work of Tim Elmore (2011), since these are the students sitting in today's high school classrooms. Next, the presentation focused on content area reading/comprehension by looking at the reading/comprehension process found in the work of Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey (2012). With this background in place, the presentation moved to techniques for this process promoted by Doug Lemov (2010). It concluded with a discussion of technique vs. strategy. Participants decided that the presentation consisted of techniques - something you practice at home, and adapt throughout your life. The finale consisted of participants engaging in a strategy called Tea Party, which illustrated the reading/comprehension process by incorporating pre-, during-, and post-reading/comprehension activities.
