Time for social studies instruction has intensified as a result of state testing in reading and mathematics and the reduction in instructional time in other subject areas. The gap between social studies goals and the curriculum that teachers are actually able to enact — increases (Wills, 2007). To accommodate the time-crunch and to begin to close the teaching-learning gap, suggest an intentional integration of reading and social studies. We will discuss a variety of reading programs and purposeful implementation of both low tech activities (e.g., globeballooning, signing the Constitution of the United States), as well as digital/online projects (e.g., reflective comics, virtual fieldtrips).
Dr. Anna Clifford and Professor Melessia Mathis were invited presenters to the Martin Institute Spring Feast Conference, February 3-4, 2011. The conference was held at the Presbyterian Day School in Memphis, TN. The schedule featured four different workshop blocks, so attendees could gain hands-on experiences with learning strategies involving different digital technologies.
Dr. Clifford and Professor Mathis’ session was entitled Creating a Team: Let 'em Read and Let 'em Experience. More than 25 attendees explored a variety of standard- based social studies activities and integrated them into reading. Participants were actively involved in a variety of hands-on-low-tech teaching-learning activities.
