New Student Information for Using Lab Computers

OPEN HOURS   Posted beside the Penick lab entrances.  General hours vary depending on the semester.  Go to www.uu.edu/computing/labhw.htm to view hours.  Also see the bulletin board in the Penick lab lobby for times when the various labs are reserved for classes each week.  On the Jackson campus, lab C-2 is typically open at all times, since it is normally not reserved for classes.

ASSISTANCE   Lab assistants are always available to help you in the Penick labs during open hours.  The Jackson-campus Student Helpdesk phone number is 5400. For help on the Germantown campus, contact Ms. Olivia Behrens at x126 or in her office beside the upstairs computer lab.

LABS AVAILABLE   On both campuses there are three main computer labs available for student use.  All the labs have Windows XP computers with Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and various other course-specific applications as posted on the bulletin boards.

YOUR NETWORK AND E-MAIL ACCOUNT   When you are fully registered as a student, you will be provided with an on-campus Novell NetWare network and e-mail account.  You must log onto the Novell NetWare network in order to use the Windows computers and to have services such as printing. (Note: This is not the same as logging on “Workstation Only.”) You are responsible for reading messages sent to your Union e-mail account.

LOGIN INFORMATION  This is the information you will need in order to log onto the Novell NetWare network for the first time:

YOUR USERNAME

S######  (# = your student ID)

YOUR TEMPORARY PASSWORD*

SSMMDD

(4th & 5th digit of your SSN/month born/day born)

*Example:  SS = 411-02-6430

MM = 08 (August) DD = 04

Temporary Password (example) = 020804

WARNING:  You will have a limited amount of grace logons using your temporary password.  The system will no longer let you log on after you have used all of your grace logons.  So, change your password AS SOON AS YOU ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO!

o        After you have logged onto the Novell NetWare logon screen, you will see the Windows 2000 logon screen.  The username is always:  student.  Leave the password blank and click OK.

o        Use your username (S######) and newly set password for future logins.

NETWORK DRIVES AVAILABLE   Once logged onto the campus network, you will have available:

Ø       Networked computer drives:

o        S##### (sometimes called G drive):  S######, where ###### is your personal Union ID number, such as s123456.  This drive is your personal network drive.  It provides ten (10) megabytes of storage space that is accessible only to the student to whom it is assigned. You can use part of this space for posting web pages by creating a folder named public_html in your G: folder; anything placed in that folder will be available at student.uu.edu/~S######. Only you can save and open files in your personal space.  No other students can access your space without them having your username and your password.  Therefore, it is very important that you do the following:

v      Log off each time you finish using your network account,

v      Do not share your password with anyone.

o        Read (sometimes called O drive):  The Read O: drive is used by some faculty members to distribute documents to students in their classes.  Your teachers will tell you if they use this drive for document distribution.  You are able to Open (hence, O:) or drag/copy files from this network drive to other drives, but you are not able to save files on O: drive.

o        Write (sometimes called S drive):  The Write S: drive is used by students to submit documents to some faculty members.  Your teachers will let you know if they want you to use this drive to submit work.  You are able to drag/copy files from a drive to a folder on the Write drive.  Due to security constraints, you will not be able to see your file in any folder on the S: drive.  In other words, even if you submit a document correctly to your teacher, you cannot see the file in the folder to verify its existence there.  Your teacher is the only one who can see the contents of folders on the S: drive.  You should also save your work to another drive (G:, Zip, or floppy) and then drag a copy of the file to the S: drive.

o        TmpShare (sometimes called T drive):  The Temp T: drive can be used temporarily by students to share files for up to seven days with other students.  Be aware that if you save a file on the TmpShare drive, all students on campus have full access to the file, including being able to open, change, rename, and delete it.  You should also know that the files on the TmpShare drive will be automatically deleted by the network system after seven days.  You should keep another copy of the file on your G: drive or on a ZIP or floppy disk.

Ø       Networked printing services

o        You must be logged into the campus network in order to print in the computer labs.  Laser printing is free.  The printer is located in the lobby.  You will need to ask a student lab assistant to allow your document to be printed.  Color printing is available on the Jackson campus for a fee.

Ø       Campus email account (Novell GroupWise)

o        You must be logged into the campus network in order to gain access to the campus version of GroupWise.

o        Your GroupWise address is to be considered an official means of university communication, so you are responsible for reading messages sent to it.  Read about this at www.uu.edu/computing/answers.htm in the section titled “What three things do ALL STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW about technology at Union?”

OTHER SERVICES  h

Ø       WWW Internet access:

o        Useful university web sites are  www.uu.edu, irislink.uu.edu, and www.uu.edu/library/

Ø       GroupWise via the Internet:

o        You can access your GroupWise email account off campus via the Internet  by going to:  mail.uu.edu.
