Mission Statement and Goals

The mission of Computing Services is to serve God by serving Union University. As each member of Computing Services pursues the mission’s specific goals below, together we each accomplish great things for God.

·         Reliable systems – Employees and students need technological tools composed of computers, software, and network services. They rely on these systems to be available and to work properly and responsively, except during times of scheduled maintenance and backup.

·         Responsive staff – In times when these systems become unavailable, unresponsive, or unreliable, our staff need to be responsive in addressing problems.

o        Our staff must take responsibility and action to get the problem solved.

o        Our staff must work and communicate in a timely, positive manner.

·         Responsible usage guidance – Employees and students must be responsible for knowing how to use these systems properly. Our staff needs to be effective in teaching appropriate procedures, policies, and problem resolution.

o        When systems are working reliably, employees and students need to know effective and efficient procedures for use of computers, software, and network services. They also need to know policies that guide ethical and proper use of the systems.

o        To prepare for times when systems become unreliable and technical staff cannot resolve the problem in as timely a manner as might be needed, employees and students need to know alternatives they can use to work around problems.

In addition, each member of the department must have the following to work effectively, efficiently, and professionally in pursuing the goals above.

  • Ability – Our staff need to have appropriate skills; we need continually to develop our professional skills and knowledge.
  • Appropriate Authority – Our staff need to have the authority to perform the duties and make the decisions each is assigned, neither over-using nor under-using that authority.
  • Accountability – Our staff need to be accountable to each other in the department and to those outside the department, acting in a timely, professional manner to perform the duties and make decisions each is assigned.

Each staff member will have an additional, detailed job description based on this master job description. Individual, periodic evaluations of work performance will be based on these documents, with evaluation coming from the staff member’s immediate supervisor, other members of the department, and/or employees and students of the university.
