The best practical experience a Journalism student can receive is working on Union’s award-winning campus newspaper, the Cardinal & Cream. Ranked the #1 campus newspaper by Baptist Press for five years and ranking as one of the top five newspapers at the Southeast Journalism Conference, the Cardinal & Cream provides students with real life experiences within an educational and nurturing environment. Students have opportunities to serve as staff writers, photojournalists, section editors, copy editors, ad managers, and managing editors during the course of their time at Union. Web Resource

The Washington Journalism Center
The Washington Journalism Center is an advanced, experiential semester on Capitol Hill that will cultivate professional news skills and encourage students to think through the implications of being a Christian working in the news media in a city that is home to the powerful and the powerless. Southeast Journalism Conference
Union students compete in several categories, including writing, layout, photography, overall best newspaper and overall best news website. The Cardinal & Cream staff has won numerous awards in the past few years, competing against state schools with daily newspapers. Web Resource
Baptist Press Collegiate Journalism Conference and Competition
Student journalists have opportunities to interact with leading journalists, such as Lauren of the Fox News Channel, Don Boykin of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Gary Fong of the San Francisco Chronicle and Manny Garcia of the Miami Herald. Students also submit their work in the Excellence in Journalism competition. Union students have won numerous first place awards in writing, design and photography.
Journalism Internships
Union faculty help students connect with professionals in their fields through internships. Journalism majors are encouraged to complete several internships before graduation. Recent journalism majors have interned at Golf Week Magazine, The Jackson Sun, and the International Mission Board.

The Cardinal and Cream is the official campus newspaper of Union University.
Budgeted as a part of the Communication Arts Department, the newspaper is published
biweekly and is distributed to students, faculty, staff and administration without charge.
